Chapter 7 of 9

Local SEO in Australia

For any Australian business with a physical location or a defined service area, local SEO is the highest-ROI SEO investment available. Getting into Google's local pack (the map results) for your suburb can generate more leads than a page 1 organic ranking.

What is local SEO?

Local SEO is the practice of optimising your online presence to appear in location-based searches. When someone searches "plumber near me", "dentist Bondi", or "best cafes in Fitzroy", Google shows a map-based results block (the "local pack") alongside regular organic results. Local SEO is what gets you into that block.

Local SEO is distinct from regular SEO in one key way: your Google Business Profile (GBP) is as important as your website - sometimes more so. For many local searches, Google shows GBP results before any organic website results.

AU Data

According to our AU Local SEO Ranking Factors study, Google Business Profile signals account for approximately 32% of local pack ranking weight - more than any other single factor category. Getting your GBP right is the single biggest lever for AU local businesses.

Google Business Profile - the foundation

Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is your free business listing on Google. It controls what appears in the local pack, Knowledge Panel, and Google Maps. If you haven't claimed and optimised yours, you're leaving significant visibility on the table.

GBP optimisation checklist

These are the highest-impact GBP optimisations for AU businesses:

Business name, address, phone (NAP)
Exact match with your website and all other listings. Inconsistency confuses Google and dilutes local authority.
9.2

Primary business category
Choose the most specific category that matches what you do. This is the #2 GBP ranking factor after proximity.
8.8

Reviews - quantity & recency
More recent 5-star reviews = better local pack rankings. Aim for at least 1 new review per month minimum.

GBP posts & updates
Weekly posts signal that your business is active. Use them to announce offers, news, or share useful content.

Reviews - the AU-specific landscape

Google reviews are the most important review source for local rankings. But Australian consumers also use several platform-specific review sources depending on industry:

Google Reviews
All industries
Must have
True Local
AU-specific directory
Must have
Yelp AU
Hospitality + services
Recommended
ProductReview.com.au
Products + services
Recommended
Healthengine
Healthcare
Healthcare only
Houzz
Trades + home
Trades only

How to generate more reviews (without violating Google's terms)

The most effective approach: ask at the moment of maximum satisfaction. For a trade business, that's when the job is complete and the customer says "great job." For a restaurant, when the bill comes. For a service business, after a successful project delivery. A simple "Would you mind leaving us a quick Google review?" with a direct link converts far better than an email blast a week later.

Never offer incentives for reviews - it violates Google's policies and can result in your GBP being suspended. Never use review-gating (filtering negative reviewers out of your review funnel) - also a policy violation.

AU Citation Sources

Citations are mentions of your business name, address, and phone number (NAP) on other websites. Consistent citations across authoritative AU directories are a significant local ranking signal.

Priority AU citations every business should have:

Yellow Pages AU
yellowpages.com.au
Must have
White Pages AU
whitepages.com.au
Must have
True Local
truelocal.com.au
Must have
Bing Places
bing.com/places
Must have
Apple Maps
mapsconnect.apple.com
Recommended
StartLocal
startlocal.com.au
Recommended
Consistency is critical

The NAP (name, address, phone) must be identical across every citation. Even minor variations - "St" vs "Street", a different phone number format - dilute the citation signal. Audit all existing citations before building new ones.

Suburb landing pages - the organic local play

For businesses serving multiple locations, suburb-specific landing pages let you rank for "[service] [suburb]" queries organically - separate from the local pack.

A good suburb page needs: the suburb name in the title tag and H1, a genuine paragraph about your service in that area (not just a template with the suburb name swapped in), a Google Maps embed, local testimonials if available, and a clear CTA with your phone number.

Thin suburb pages that are obviously templated ("We offer plumbing in Bondi. We also offer plumbing in Manly...") are a Google spam risk. Each page needs meaningful unique content - even 300 words of genuinely useful, location-specific information is better than 1,000 words of duplicated template copy.

Chapter 7 - Key Takeaways
  • Google Business Profile signals account for ~32% of local pack ranking weight - it's the most important local SEO asset
  • NAP consistency across all citations and your website is critical - even minor variations dilute your local signal
  • Generating regular, recent Google reviews is the highest-leverage ongoing local SEO activity
  • Australian-specific citation sources (Yellow Pages AU, True Local, White Pages AU) carry more weight than generic global directories for AU local rankings
  • Suburb landing pages work well for multi-location businesses - but only with genuine, unique content per page
