Definition

Keyword Difficulty (KD) - A metric (usually 0-100) estimating how hard it is to rank in the top 10 for a given keyword, based on the authority and content quality of current ranking pages. Lower KD = more achievable for newer or smaller sites.

In more depth

Keyword Difficulty is a third-party metric (Ahrefs, Semrush, and Moz each calculate it differently) that attempts to compress the competitiveness of a keyword into a single number. While methodologies vary, most tools primarily calculate KD based on the Domain Rating or Domain Authority of pages currently ranking in the top 10 - the higher the authority of ranking competitors, the higher the KD score.

Interpreting KD scores requires context. A KD of 40 on Ahrefs might be very achievable for a site with DR 50+, while being effectively impossible for a new site with DR 10. The score is relative to your site's current authority, not an absolute measure. A better approach than chasing low KD scores is to find keywords where you can offer the genuinely best answer - sometimes a high-KD keyword is winnable if the current ranking pages are poor quality.

For Australian businesses, AU-specific keyword difficulty is often lower than global KD estimates. Australian versions of queries ("conveyancer Sydney," "project management software Australia") tend to have less competition than their global equivalents, especially from internationally focused competitors. This is one of the strongest arguments for local targeting - lower effective difficulty for the queries that actually convert AU customers.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good keyword difficulty score to target?

For new sites (DR/DA 0-20), target KD 0-20. For growing sites (DR/DA 20-40), KD 20-40 is realistic. Established sites (DR/DA 40+) can compete for KD 40-60 terms. Very high KD (70+) is typically reserved for sites with very strong domain authority. Always prioritise relevance and user intent over hitting a specific KD target.

Is keyword difficulty the same across all tools?

No - Ahrefs, Semrush, and Moz calculate KD differently and their scores are not comparable. A KD of 50 in Ahrefs is a different level of competition from a KD of 50 in Semrush. Always use the same tool consistently when making KD-based decisions, and treat the absolute number as a directional guide rather than a precise measurement.
